Drops of sweat slowly sliding down his unshaven and dirty face. He was suffering in the Texas heat, sitting on the side of the road. His sign says he is hungry and needs food.
And, I am unsure what to do. If you can find alcohol-free items, chose those, or, as suggested by the reader, omit the items from the kit. So, I grab from our snack bag when I hand out a care kit. Makes sure that the food and water are fresh. As we shopped, we talked about each item and why it would be important to include.
He really listened because he told his brother all about it later! One of each was put in a sock including the other matching sock. I tried to buy gender neutral smelling things and went for the basic white athletic socks. As each item was placed in the sock, we talked about the daily needs of someone who is homeless. With each item we placed in the sock, the boys could better understand the how being homeless impacts even the smallest thing about your life.
He ran to his saving jar he is saving for a building toy and grabbed money to include in each envelope that was going into the care kits. I can help a little with that. Sheila brings to life acts of kindness and service projects that kids can do.
In her daily adventures of serving with her young boys, she has witnessed the awesome things that happen when kids serve others. She has taught in a variety of settings from a classroom in small town Texas to a psychiatric unit in Chicago.
I admire the spirit of generosity you are clearly instilling in your children. Thanks so much for improving our world! What a fantastic idea. Thank you for the inspiration! I took a peek at your site and am eager to go back. Great picture of you and your boys on your site! I love this idea! We foster children through Safe Families for Children, and we recently had a child who had been homeless.
This would be a lovely project for us to do in his honor. Thanks for linking up- found you at Share it Saturday. I blog over at http: Ready to read through more of your blog. This is wonderful to find people that teach their children something other than wanting everything for themselves. I would like to feature this post on a Thursday in May. Thank you for the compliment and the hug.
Love finding like minded people out there! Sorry about the lack of contact info. Thanks for letting me know. Sheila, could you contact me so I could talk with you. It touched my heart that your kids were so involved in this! I had a brother who was homeless as a teen after he left home. Blessing Bags are awesome! Thanks for sharing your experience.
I have had a greater heart for service since actively involving my kids. Who knew such a simple thing of actively serving in small acts could change our family so much! What a fantastic idea! I have done something similar in the past, and our family loved the experience. Wet Ones and tootthpaste are great alternatives. Thank you for your comment and sharing your concern!
Love getting info and insights from others. I just want to say that not only the act of giving but also the conversation you had with your kids about why you are giving the homeless certain items is teaching empathy. Empathy is a virtue that is sorely lacking in the world today.
While your children have never been homeless, you are teaching them how to empathize…to understand what it is like to be homeless. That ability will crossover. You hit the nail on the head. Getting our hearts and our spirits to connect with the action of serving and sacrificing for others. Thank you for commenting! I also used to work with the homeless population. This is a wonderful idea! You are a good Mom! I sure would like to hear what you do with your 59 acts!
Tank you for your comment! Another great thing to include is a small gift certificate to a restaurant Subway is cheap and relatively healthy. This is so great!
Found it on Facebook recently. This is just what I need to add into my future plans for my boys. Please share this idea.
We need kids being involve in community service and becoming aware of the needs around us. Your site is looking great! I am planning on doing these for my grandchildren to put in their cars and mine. Any time we see a homeless person they all worry about not giving them any money, but since carrying a checkcard I seldom have cash or change with me. Do you actually put some sort of label on the bag before giving it to them? That might seem like a funny question, but just handing them a sock may seem sort of.
We usually ask as we hand it to them: And, socks are a very desired item. Let me know how it goes! I LOVE this idea! We always pray for the homeless and offer food to those that we drive by lots of pre-packaged healthy snacks in our van.
But this is great! Thank you for sharing! Alisha, Thanks for commenting. Evidently, socks are super important and a great item to include in hygiene kit. We will be adding food bars to our kits for the next several months. And, I have taken note of the need for good sturdy bags. They are cheap and small when folded up so they fit great in the bag, and do a great job at keeping someone warm. You are right; they are very small when folded up. Makes it easy to add to the kit!
I am someone who is on a very tight budget but still want to help the homeless each year especially when it gets cold outside! What I like best about these care packages, is that often times you can find all of these items at the dollar store!
I think I am going. You are totally right! I recently asked for toiletry donations from my friends who travel and scored several packages. Shared it too — several times I believe. Such a fabulous idea. I really love the way you involved your son in writing the note and picking out the supplies. Way to build empathy! This is amazing what you and ur boys do It has really inspired me to want to do this with my nieces. I want to thank u for all u do an let u no I loved reading all about it ur a amazing person god bless you.
Thank you to all the kind hearted moms, you are teaching the next generation that caring about others is important, even the others that most people ignore and scurry past. I belong to a downtown church where many homeless visit regularly. Last year, I began making snack sacks with a group of grade kids to hand out to our visitors when they come to the door hungry.
Once a dog forms a close relationship with a caring owner, their loyalty can be unbreakable, and they will stick with their owner through thick and thin. This post is a tribute to homeless dogs, who love and stick with their homeless owners no matter what.
If you know a similar story, don't hesitate to share your photos with us! Surely the heading should be dog sleeps in the arms of homeless man rather than the other way around. Sorry to be a pedant. This guy lives in Dublin and some kids took his rabbit and through it into a river.
He jumped in after it and saved it. He really loves his animals. I always give him money when I see him. Hello, do you actually know the context of this picture? It is actually a picture of a ''fake'' homeless man with two drugged dogs in its lap. There is a massive use of cute dogs by fake homeless to induce pity and gain more money with this tactic. Your image is too large, maximum file size is 8 MB.

They were only able to talk for about ten minutes before Emmy had to leave with a friend, but the year-old actress had found the mysterious homeless man to be surprisingly captivating and intriguing.
Could she seriously date a homeless man? Emmy had a lot to consider before deciding whether or not she would return to the same park bench the following Saturday to see Vic again. Saturday arrived, and, just as Vic had requested a week earlier, Emmy returned to park bench where they met. After 20 minutes I was about to give up when he turned up. I came to check just in case. Over the course of their first official date, Emmy confirmed the suspicions she had from their first interaction that she was, in fact, attracted to Vic.
Moreso, she was falling in love with him. I had never met anyone like him before — someone who found everything a huge adventure. He thought for sure that she was just being nice during their first interaction on the park bench. When he first approached her, he never would have expected that she would agree to go on a real date with a dirty homeless stranger.
Now, Vic was positive that he was in love with her. The problem was that Emmy needed to return to Vienna in a few weeks. Vic and Emmy had three more dates during her time in Amsterdam, and each time they got together, she felt herself more and more attracted to him.
The only problem was that Vic had no phone and no permanent address. Emmy was hopeful that she would hear back from Vic, but after a full three weeks with no word from her Amsterdam love interest, she began to worry that she would never see him again. Then, on a Monday morning, her phone rang. She knew exactly who was calling. After finding various odd jobs around the city of Amsterdam, Vic had finally saved up enough money to afford a train ticket to Vienna.
Even though Vic and Emmy were finally reunited, their complicated love story was far from over. Now, they were faced with a whole new set of challenges that would put their love to the test. While Emmy always saw Vic as a handsome, funny, and kindhearted gentleman, it was not going to be easy for her to convince her loved ones that a man with no education, no job, and no home was right for her. Before they met him my dad was also afraid that Vic was going to give me some terrible disease and my mom was worried that he was going to steal from me.
Vic and Emmy had fallen in love with each other, but Vic still needed to get back on his feet. But now that he was in love with Emmy, he knew that he needed to make some big changes. Luckily he had Emmy to support him every step of the way.
The only question remaining was: Because Emmy was madly in love with Vic and only wanted the best for him, she had no problem supporting him through his studies.
Thanks to her devotion, Vic was able to study full time, graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering, and find a job beyond his wildest dreams.
